+Ave Cor Mariae

  1. Follow the teachers wherever he goes (even to Calvary)
  2. Who is the Greatest Disciple?

-The Child (like/not-ish) eg. of Humility

-Why? The least in society-no power

-No desire for honor, not jealous; forgets injuries,

-Trusts-even when there’s trouble

Today’s Gospel: Sep 19th, 2021

Mk 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee,
but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house,
he began to ask them,
“What were you arguing about on the way?”
But they remained silent.
They had been discussing among themselves on the way
who was the greatest.
Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,
“If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child, he placed it in their midst,
and putting his arms around it, he said to them,
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”

This follows exactly after the last Sunday’s Gospel.

Sep 12th’ Gospel

Mk 8:27-35

Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that I am?”
They said in reply,
“John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets.”
And he asked them,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said to him in reply,
“You are the Christ.”
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the gospel will save it.”

Every time Jesus describe that he predicts he will be crucified, he specifically tells he will suffer on a cross, then will rise again. He knows it’s coming. The last week’s gospel was the first of His prediction. Peter doesn’t like to hear about Jesus’s dying. Jesus responded, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Jesus was winning by losing.

Crucifix is the place Jesus did the most for all of us, thus we see crucifix, not the empty tomb. His greatest work was suffering. Jesus was obedient even to death.

If you want to be my disciple, you have to follow me. You have to deny yourself, take our your cross and follow me.

What is being Lord’s disciple? What it means to be His disciple?

“He has to deny himself, take out his cross, and follow me.”

The cross here is real cross. It’s a hardship.

In today’s gospel, Jesus is comparing himself as a child.

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;

and whoever receives me,

receives not me but the One who sent me.”

He describes a child as an ideal disciple. A child doesn’t have power in the world. No prestige. No honor. If a little prince/princess, he/she will have a regent, but himself/herself has real power. Children are resilient. They bounce back. Think about being little. Don’t get frustrated that you can’t change things. When they trust, they listen very carefully.

We need to be like a child, but not childish. Being childish is just naivety. In childlike minds, they know everything will be ok with God. If we love him, we trust him, all things will be ok.

Question: What aspect of being a child of God/What are the qualities of being a child of God

Please give me all the graces I can receive from this sacrament.

Below is the prayer for those who get confirmation soon.

O Lord, loving Father,

please grant me all the grace and love that I can receive from the sacrament of confirmation,

so that throughout my life I may be your worthy and active disciple of your Son, Jesus.

I ask this through Jesus your Son our Lord and His Holy Mother Mary's intercession.
