Feb 21st, 1st Sunday of Lent. Motjari meeting

40 days of Lent started on Ash Wednesday. From  Ash Wednesday, it is 46 total days until Easter. 40 days comes from 46 #of days - 6 Sundays

Stations of the cross is one the the recommended prayers. (Lists of prayers are added at the end of this posting.)

: We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. (Genuflect)

Today’s Gospel

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert
and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan.
He was among wild beasts,*
and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Three important points that happened here are:

1.The Spirits drove Jesus out into the desert. He lead him to the desert.

2. Jesus was there for 40 days.

3. Jesus was tempted by Satan

*We see juxtaposition between what happened to Jesus and what happens to Adam and Noah.

God sent Jesus to the desert.

Noah’s time, God made it rained for 40 days and 40 nights.

Satan is very dangerous and active. Jesus had Spiritual combat against Satan.

We are named as church militants. Church suffering are the souls in purgatory, who are finishing the war as militants. Church triumphant are those in heaven.

Before the fall, before the temptation, Adam was with the beast.

Jesus was re-living the hardship Noah had, and also he re-lived the temptation Adam had. Because of sin, the devil was in charge of those temptations. Adam was going to be tempted, because of the sin. The battle had been joined. Jesus had been weak, because he had been in the desert fasting for 40 days.

Three of a kind temptations and Admonition

  1. The Lord:
    1) “If you are son of God, commend this stone to become bread.” (Pleasure)
    2) Throw your self from the pinnacle, and let the angel catches you. (Stupid attention, fame)
    3) All the kingdoms, all the glory, I’ll give it to you, if you worship me. (Devil wanted replace God, which can be oneself, knowledge, power, anything. Pride/Dethrone God.)
  2. Garden of Eden Genesis Chapter 3:
    1) Eve sees the tree is good for food, which satisfies hunger. (Pleasure)
    2) It was nice to look at. (Vain)
    3) The fruit of the tree was desirable to gain knowledge to be like God, so close up to the point to replace God.
  3. St. John
    1) Lust of the flesh. The desire for the things of the body. Bodily pleasure.
    2) Lust of the eyes.
    3) Pride of life. I exert myself to put others down. Pride is the basis of every sin.
  4. Jesus’s Advices for Lent. : Ash Wednesday Gospel The format is not “if you” but “when you”, since all are mandatory.
    1) When you fast
    2) When you give alms (charity)
    3) When you pray (to Father) Prayer is the answer to pride. Think about Sorrowful mysteries, think about Stations of the cross, think about 3 O’clock Devine mercy.

Temptation and Admonition is ultimately for:

  • Pleasure
  • Possession/ Pleasing to the eyes (perception)
  • Pride/Dethrone God

This year, we started little early Lent in Feb. Every year on the 1st Sunday of lent, we read the temptation of Lent. St. Mark shows a very short script about  Temptation.

Jesus had fasted for 40 days. That’s when Satan tempted him. Temptation comes when we are weak, when we don’t have spiritual generosity. Jesus weakens himself by fasting.

When you fast, it’s not always about food. You can start fasting about playing games, social media, etc. We can restrain ourselves from those temptations.

Gospel of Ash Wednesday

Mt 6:1-6, 16-18

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.

And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

There are two official days to be recommended to fast: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

January 22 Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children ( related to Roe v. Wade on abortion law) had been added as another fasting day.

Recommended prayers for the Lent are:

  • Devine Mercy
  • Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Stations of the cross

St. Augustine’ prayers are good, too.

Notetaker’s comment: I cannot find the sample prayer Fr. Foeckler mentioned online, but found this link about St. Augustine’s prayers.

How To Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Optional Opening Prayers:

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls,

and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.

O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,

envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

(Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle's Creed

For each of the five decades (On each “Our Father” bead of the rosary, pray)

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

(On each of the 10 “Hail Mary” beads, pray)

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Concluding prayer (Repeat 3 times)

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Optional Closing Prayer

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
